Fieldwork Design & Architecture is a woman-owned architecture firm and interiors studio based in Portland, Oregon, and Samsø, Denmark. Founded in 2011 by interior designer Tonia Hein, Associate IIDA, Principal, and architect Cornell Anderson, AIA, Principal, they head a team of talented designers that work in a collaborative studio culture focused on well detailed, concept driven design.
Fieldwork’s approach to a project is to develop a design that reflects the values and philosophy of the client, inspired from the context of the project site and history. This produces an architectural expression that is forward thinking, innovative, and timeless, creating memorable and meaningful experiences.. Whether the work be architectural, interiors, furniture, or some blend of the three, Fieldwork’s designs have a direct, profound connection to the natural environment. The designs utilize sustainable and local materials, take advantage of views to the area and landscape, and utilize natural ventilation and day lighting. Sensitivity to, and inspiration from, existing architecture, history, and landscape are fundamental.
A vessel. A hive. A house. A bridge. Our desire is to make something beautiful; not just for you, but with you. What we do is beyond liminal - our work conveys connection to place with environment. Space is personal, it requires attention to varying needs; whether you’re a plant, a pollinator, a person, or a community. The design of a light filled atrium, an arched forest walkway, the familiar embrace of a home, or the flow through a space are each guided by artistry and building science. We believe that time is the authority in the assembly of beauty and structure. When a moment is understood s the meeting of past and future to make the present, that moment, like a durable space, is made to last.
For the past 14 years, Fieldwork has worked to create architectural alchemy in all shapes and sizes, serving a wide range of clients, from businesses to bees. Each of our projects are responsibly designed and crafted with environmentally responsible, locally sourced materials. This not only ensures quality through craft ethics, but also a bond with the environment.
